If you’ve ever felt the soul-crushing disappointment of a “Fatal Error” during a high-stakes migration, you aren’t alone. I recently spent 96 hours in the trenches of a VCF 9.0.2 deployment that nearly brought my project to a screeching halt. It wasn’t a hardware failure or a network outage—it was a logic puzzle designed by a time traveler.
I’m sharing this because if you are planning a brownfield import of vSphere 8 into VCF 9, this will happen to you unless you actively take control of the process.
The Import
Let’s set the stage. In the vast majority of scenarios, if you are importing an existing vSphere 8 environment as a brownfield Workload Domain into a VCF 9 Fleet—and your hardware is compatible—your ultimate endgame is to upgrade that cluster to VCF 9. You don’t import an environment just to leave it behind; you import it to bring it into the future.
That was exactly my plan. I was working on a project to ingest an existing vSphere 8 cluster, and everything seemed to be going perfectly. I ran the import wizard, and here is where the system’s own automation becomes a trap.
By design, SDDC Manager will always look for the newest possible binary. It scans your environment and checks the Online or Offline depot for the latest NSX, vCenter , ESXi hosts versions compatible with your currently installed vSphere version. Wanting to be helpful, in my case, it instantly grabbed NSX 4.2.3.3.
If you are staging your own migration right now—whether you’re testing this out in your home lab or deploying it in a massive enterprise data center—pay close attention to what happens next. The download finished, the import green-lighted, and I felt like a hero. Mission accomplished, right? Wrong.
The Failure: Four Days That Ruined My Weekend
The nightmare started when I actually executed my master plan and tried to upgrade that newly imported domain up to vSphere 9. I triggered the SDDC Manager pre-check, expecting a quick “Success,” but instead, I hit a massive wall: a “Back in Time” upgrade error.
Here is the frustrating reality I discovered buried in the release notes:
- VCF 9.0.2 (the target I was upgrading to) was released on January 23, 2026.
- NSX 4.2.3.3 (the version SDDC Manager “helpfully” auto-selected for my import) was released on January 27, 2026.
Because those four days made my current version chronologically “newer” than the target version, the upgrade engine strictly forbade the move. Even though I was moving up to a major new release (VCF 9), the system saw it as a chronological downgrade. I was trapped.
Phase 1: The Tactical Retreat (Manual Scrub)
🚨 CRITICAL WARNING: Do NOT touch the “Delete Domain” button in the VCF 9 Ops web portal!
If you try to delete the VI Workload Domain via the UI, the system will attempt to delete your actual production environment. It will wipe your VMs and reset your ESXi hosts back to zero. This is obviously a non-starter for a production environment. To safely remove the domain solely from SDDC Manager’s reference database without compromising your workloads, you must use the API method below.
1. Scrubbing VI Workload Domain via SDDC Manager via API
SSH into SDDC Manager as vcf user and execute these specific deletions to clear the inventory database safely:
Remove NSX-T Cluster Association: (Note: Only run this if the NSX Manager is used exclusively by this domain.)

Decommission the Hosts (Database Only): Generate your token, grab your host IDs, create your ESXiIds.json, and trigger the host removal:

2. Cleaning the vCenter (The MOB Method)
I then had to jump into the vCenter Managed Object Browser to unregister the SDDC Manager extension.

com.vmware.sddcManager, and click Invoke Method.
3. The Deep Clean: Uninstalling NSX from the Metal
After you’ve scrubbed the SDDC Manager inventory, you must ensure the actual infrastructure is “NSX-free.” This prevents the new import from stumbling over legacy configurations.
Removing NSX Preparedness from ESXi Hosts
Before you can unregister NSX from vCenter, you must remove the kernel modules (VIBs) from the hosts.
- Via NSX Manager UI (Recommended):
- Navigate to System > Fabric > Nodes > Host Transport Nodes.
- Select the managed cluster and click Remove NSX.
- Select the option to “Force Delete” if the standard removal hangs due to the SDDC Manager disconnect.
- Via CLI (The “Nuclear” Option): If the UI fails, SSH into each ESXi host and run:Bash
/etc/init.d/nsx-opsagent stop /etc/init.d/nsxa stop nsxcli -c del nsxNote: A reboot is highly recommended after manual VIB removal to ensure the stack is completely cleared from memory.
Deleting the Transport Zone and Uplink Profiles
Ensure there are no lingering logical segments or transport zones.
- In NSX Manager, go to System > Fabric.
- Delete the Transport Zones.
- Delete the Uplink Profiles and IP Pools created during the initial failed import.
Unregistering NSX from vCenter (Compute Manager)
This breaks the final link between the NSX Manager and your vCenter.
- In the NSX Manager UI, go to System > Fabric > Compute Managers.
- Select your vCenter Server.
- Click Delete.
- Crucial: If prompted, select “Keep Registration” as No to ensure the extension is pulled from vCenter.
Final Verification
Before you attempt the “New” Brownfield import with your forced version (e.g., NSX 4.2.3.1), verify the following:
- VDS Check: Ensure the Distributed Switch no longer has “NSX” listed under the encapsulation or MTU settings.
- VIB Check: Run
esxcli software vib list | grep nsxon your hosts. The list should be empty.
This is vital. If you don’t strip the NSX footprint from your physical layer now, your next attempt will fail immediately.
- On every host: Run
nsxcli -c del nsx(or use the/etc/init.d/nsx-opsagent stopmethod) to wipe the VIBs. - In NSX Manager: Go to System > Fabric > Compute Managers and delete the registration for that vCenter. Ensure you select “No” when asked to keep the registration.
Phase 2: Overriding the Future
Now that I had a clean slate, I couldn’t just run the wizard again—because SDDC Manager is programmed to relentlessly hunt for that newest binary in the depot, it would just download the exact same “wrong” NSX version all over again. I had to forcefully blindfold it and mandate it use NSX 4.2.3.1 (which was safely released before Jan 23).

Phase 3: The Successful Import and Upgrade
I fired up the import wizard one more time. Due to the forced parameters, SDDC Manager correctly pulled the older NSX 4.2.3.1 binary, and I successfully imported vCenter 8 as a Brownfield Workload Domain!
With the chronological mismatch finally out of the way, my ultimate goal was unlocked: the actual upgrade to VCF 9 and vSphere 9 executed perfectly.
